    1. Beth Goobie is best known for her quirky and dark young adult novels She s published several of them, beginning in 1994 Her novel Before Wings won the Canadian Library Association s Young Adult Book Award in 2000, and was chosen by young readers for the Best Books list of the American Library Association.Much of the turmoil in Goobie s life has been laid bare in two books for adult readers, Scars of Light, which is autobiographical poetry, and The Only Good Heart, a book of short stories Both are built on the theme of cults, abuse, and emotional torture They were, she says, both therapeutic for herself and a warning to others.

    2. Jujube is a freshman girl in school and for the first time a popular boy that she has liked for a long time now is asking her to the Valentine’s Day dance, Brent. When they go to the dance Brent doesn’t just want to dance, he wants to go out to his car to get “something”. As they’re outside in Brent’s car they move to the back seat were things start to get a little out of hand. Jujube doesn’t want it to end up this way. They go back inside to the dance. At school, Monday, Jujube is [...]

    3. I read this book because a staff member didn't think it belonged in the library of an intermediate school. After reading, I would respectfully disagree. While the subject matter may not be appropriate for our younger students, our 7th and 8th grade students could learn a great deal from this story. The message is quite simple: reputations are hard to make but easy to break. In particular, it highlights the power that a few cruel rumors can have on a young persons Psyche. While I didn't particula [...]

    4. I thought this book was very good. The book was very interesting and gave a good message on bullying. It was realistic. When Jujube was getting bullied I thought it was sad because the entire thing got out of control. I really liked the part where the club got together and decided to stand up for themselves against bullying. Jujube is the main character who gets bullied. She shows a mix of emotions during this time. But the thing that stands out the most is her strength. She doesn't let the bull [...]

    5. Jordan Whipple, 5-6, sticks and stones, n/a, 77, 9/29/09,9jujube changed the most in this book. she had a boyfriend and then she was going to have sex in the back seat but she backed out because she thought they were going to fast. so the next day she went to school and there was writing everywhere saying she was a slut. so she didn't want to go to school one day so her mom went in and talked to the Principal and said she wanted all the writing off of the walls so she changed from being a slut t [...]

    6. I thought this book shows how quickly bullying can happen and how mean it is. Jujube's reaction to it all was very realistic and I felt so badly for her. I loved the ending. I think this could've made a great full length book.

    7. I absolutely loved this book! I've never hurt someone like that, but it makes me wonder why we give each other titles about what they do with their lives.

    8. At just 88 pages of actual story, and those pages small with large, spaced out type, this book was a quick read. I wouldn't be surprised if some of my struggling readers found it hard to finish it in an hour, like I'd expect. The premise is typical high school: a girl goes out to a boys car and kisses him, but when he moves a little faster, she has her doubts. When they return to the dance, all the other guys think the couple had sex, and the boy doesn't disagree. The girl gets shamed for her be [...]

    9. In the story stick and stones jujube a high school student faces challenges of being called dirty names and talked about her behind her back. At first she gets beat down by being called names but then gets back up and takes it in a positive ways and turning it into a class project. In the beginning of the story it starts out slow then gets the meaning to shows more and going throughout the story she realizes that she can let these words hurt her so she stands up for herself and goes up in front [...]

    10. In the story sticks and stones jujube a high school student faces the challenge of being called names and talked about behind her back. She doesn’t take it so well at first but as time goes on she turns it into a positive by incorporating others talked about into a class project. In my opinion the story starts out pretty boring but as it goes on it gets more interesting and the meaning of the story starts to show.

    11. I think that this book was good and it tells a story in a very dramatic way of what goes on in schools and some stuff that can or does happen I think that it is a book that teenagers should be reading. This book is about a guy or multiple guys who juge the girls in there school 1-10 on how they look how they dress how there makeup is ect. After they are done picking on them and picking a number they will decide if they are a “slut” or not.

    12. Well for me i gave this book 4 star for an reason because best book every i'm telling you this because I know.Well I think it's the best book because their so much you can learn from this book and because some of the event happening in this book really can and does happen. An example of when i'd learned something was on page7 when Jujube went to the school dance with an guy named Brent he was cool maybe.Well because on page 10 that day Jujube went back to school every one was looking at her talki [...]

    13. To start off with JuJube was so excited when she was asked out by a boy she liked alot. His name was Brent. As they were at the dance he told her he had to go get some equipment out of the car for the band and asked her to go with. As they were out there he said he just wanted to e alone with here and tried to do stuff with her. She didn't want it to happened like thy so they went back in the dance and everyone was starring at them. The next day at school she saw everyone laughing at her and tal [...]

    14. I like the book “Stick and Stones “ a lot because it was really realistic , everything that happens in this book Can happen to you in daily basis because many teens parents are divorced and they have family problems and i believe everyone has family problems but the main problem is the school You might wonder why but this girls are getting call “SLUTS” for something that they didn’t even do for some rumour that some guy that couldn’t get what he wanted said . You think that is fine ? [...]

    15. I hate giving a book less than 5 stars, but in all honesty, this was a book I just could not connect with. Ever have that happen? However, I went ahead and read the next book in the series (Lucky me!!!!) and LOVED it so much that I went back and finished this one, and I am really glad I did. I think I just had trouble relating to Mandy and Lexi.ly Lexi I think. It has such a cool premise that I just could not turn down the opportunity to read this. Shawn does an amazing job developing the charac [...]

    16. The story is told in the point of view of Jujube who is a high school girl who is going on a date with her dream guy, Brent. Before the end of the night he gets her into the back seat of his car and tries to get a little extra something from her but she doesn’t feel comfortable and wants to go back inside. She heard the rumors the next day when she got to school. All the guys are making comments about her date with Brent and she notices things written on the bathroom stalls about her. Througho [...]

    17. This book is about Jubjube and how she survives humiliation. It all started when Brent, someone who Jubjube had liked for about 10 years, asked her to the dance on Friday. Jubjube accepts because that day, her left eyebrow was gone because she leaned too close to the Bunsen burner in science class, so she had a left hand covering her forehead. On Friday, they were at the dance but Brent had to get something from the car so he asked Jubjube to follow him. Brent had tricked her and he tried kissin [...]

    18. The novel Sticks and Stones (which isn't well named) by Beth Goobie is a perfect representation of how not everybody should write. I found this book really repulsive, in my short time of reading this "novel" completely dumbfounded at how "why!?" there was in it. I got this book knowing that it wasn't going to be a masterpiece but i never expected of how bad it really was. It's not a high school level reading book, it took about five hours of constant reading to finish it completely, it's about 8 [...]

    19. “Jujube” got her nickname because she has one green eye and one blue. She’s a moderately popular girl at school—fifteen, sweet and friendly. She lives with her mom and has her friend Sophie and Sophie’s mom living at her house because Sophie’s abusive dad has just gotten out of jail. So—while taking in Sophie might be more than average kindness, Jujube is pretty much an average girl. But she has more than an average crush on Brent. When he asks her to the dance, she learns about his [...]

    20. Part of Orca Publishers’ popular Orca Soundings series, El Que Diran is the Spanish translation of Sticks and Stones. As is typical of the Orca Soundings series, the book is written at a level accessible to most middle school students and is an excellent resource for ELL and struggling readers. Jujube is estatic to be asked to a dance by Brent, a student at her high school she had a crus on for years. At the dance, he pressures her to take the relationship farther than she is comfortable with. [...]

    21. First let me say that this was a good book and all my friends should read it. One reason why i like this book is because for one talks about issues and problems a girl goes through. Another reason is is that some of her reasons relate to me and probably others. Last reason is that she acutally finds a way to solve it and thats good for me to see and take from so thats 3 reasons why i like this book. I would recommend this book to everyone. Why? because it might reflect on them as well as it did [...]

    22. i read sticks and stones as an IR book. this book is about a girl how her dreams are coming true when she gets lead by a drea mboy. but he brings her his car and he goes to far. so she just leaves but when she gets to school the next day things arent well. people are looking at her talking, then she finds out people think she did it and now are calling her a slut, the guy wont do anything either. can she survive. i have a text-to-world connection. this happens everywhere, probably in our own sch [...]

    23. This book is about a girl name Jujube. People in her school call her slut because she kissed a popular guy. People thought that, since it was late at night and Jujube wen in thatt guys car. People think that they did more then kiss, so her reputation got runined from that night. At the end of this book, Jujube learns a lesson, which is, words cant make you! Only you can make yourself!I cant connect to this book because I never been called a naame that represented another side of me. And i alsoca [...]

    24. Jujube becomes the target of a vicuous gossip and bathroom wall grafitti when her dance date doesn't deny the rumor that she slept with him on the their first date. Refusing to become a victim, she uses her class assignment on Ways We Communicate to fight an administration that refuses to take the matter seriously.Sticks and Stones is part of Orca's Soundings series. Written by award winning Canadian authors, the short themetic novels are designed for classroom use with special appeal for the re [...]

    25. School bullying, slut shaming to be precise, a very dark subject matter and in parts this novella really lives up to the challenge that the topic brings. The emotions the protagonist Jujube goes through ring honest and true. The message conveyed here is a good one and there lies the problem: you get kind of hit with moral mace on the head. The story needed more flesh to fully come to live and by that I mean to mix the message transportation with an exhilarating, entertaining tale. I admit, the s [...]

    26. Where to start hmm. Sticks and Stones follows a typical teenage girl named Jujube, but her "typical" takes a turn after a date with Brent. Despite holding out, rumours float around about her about what happened in the back seat of his car. Being branded with the name of "slut," Jujube gathers similar victims to fight back the labels. The synopsis intrigued me, however I was fairly disappointed. It was adequately paced but the entire plot felt as if it came out of a cliche teen chick-flick, (not t [...]

    27. The book Sticks and Stones is a realistic fiction book. The main characters in this book are Ralph,Scott,Jujube, and Brent. Jujube is girl everyone always picks on and calls her mean names. Scott and his friends do bad things to her. Ralph one of Jujube friend is always standing up for her, make her feel better about herself.Jujube sleeps around with guys every night, that is why people make fun of her and call her names. Ralph stand up for her so much people started asking are you like your best [...]

    28. SeToya ChambersSticks and StonesBy: Beth GoobieThe Orca Soundings SeriesSticks and Stones by Beth Goobie is worth reading because it helps females watch carefully about what they do when they are in a relationship with a boy. Some people try to switch what really happened and put things into their own words. In the book Sticks and Stones Jujube and her boyfriend were at a party, and they went out to the car for something. As they were in the car Jujube’s boyfriend tried to have sex with her, b [...]
